Biofuel policy target

To grow the crops needed to meet the EU’s biofuels policy target, costing up to £50 billion by 2020, it would require all the farmland the EU currently uses to grow food, at a time when world food prices are soaring.

Call that an Island?

There are EU laws on what legally constitutes an island- anything with a bridge to it is not an island, nor is it an island if it is less than 1km from the mainland, it is not an island if it has less than 50 permanent residents or if it contains an EU capital city.

Juniper oil regulated by EU

All medicinal substances which have a physiological action have to be licensed under EU laws. Juniper oil has a physiological action - yet if you have three or four non-medicinal gins in the pub, you’d get more juniper oil than you would when taking a herbal remedy.

Sorry Sir your Kiwi is too small

Bristol market trader Tim Down, 53, was forced to bin 5000 kiwi fruits worth  £1,000 because they were 1mm smaller than EU rules allow. He was forbidden from even giving away the perfectly healthy fruit.

Jobless Eastern Europeans can still claim the dole

Jobless Eastern Europeans can still claim the dole in the UK because an
EU directive says that provided an unemployed worker is seeking a job in their homeland, they can continue to be paid benefits by the country where they were laid off.

EU fish quotas, yet another waste!

Almost a million tonnes of fish are discarded in the North Sea every year as a result of EU fish quotas, with around 100,000 tonnes worth £40 million dumped by Scottish boats

Get off my Bus!

A Brussels ruling forbids local services longer than 30 miles. Drivers have to pull in as they hit that limit and order everyone OFF their bus, change the route number on the front and invite passengers to jump back ON to resume the trip

Scottish drive to London to get their shellfish back!

Under EU law all restaurants must buy their shellfish from a wholesaler. Shellfish caught in Scotland is often sent to Billingsgate market London before completing a 900-mile round-trip back to Scotland.
